Scholars go close at Wyrley tournament

The U11 Scholars took two strong teams to the prestigious Wyrley Sevens tournament and produced an excellent showing by getting both squads to the knockout stages.

The Blues, reached the semi finals after comfortably winning their group phase without conceding a goal. Then they beat Wyrley Juniors Wanderers in the quarter final 2-0, before falling to AFC Waverton from Chester by the same scoreline in the semi-final.

The Reds started slowly in their group drawing their first 2 games but then won 3 out of the next 4 to finish 3rd in their group again scoring 7 times without reply in 6 games, Kaine Cheshire scoring 5 of them.

In the quarter finals they were up against a strong Wyrley Juniors side, this time the Dragons and dominated large parts of the game and hit the crossbar twice through Kaine |Cheshire and Daniel Lynskey. Extra time couldnt separate the sides so it went to the lottery of penalties and Wyrley came out on top as Chasetown missed one of their 3 spot kicks.

In summary, this was an excellent workout and some excellent pass and move football was produced by both squads.

Would moving kids' football to a summer game help improve the development of young footballers?
Yes - better pitches mean a better chance to develop technique/skills
No - wouldn't make any real difference to development
Maybe - but I'd be worried about more injuries on firm pitches
