Chasetown Colts returned to winning ways with this hard fought victory over AFC Cannock Town. On a very difficult pitch, Colts were soon into their stride and were probing the Cannock goal, with Fabian Smith particularly impressive. Luke Heele went close a couple of times and the Cannock goalkeeper made some smart stops. It was Chasetown who drew first blood when Charlie Mellor slotted home, after taking a pass from the very dangerous Dominik Russell. AFC Cannock then fought back to equalise, when after some indecision in the Colts defence, a Cannock player closed in on goal and gave keeper Lewis Harvey no chance with a shot into the far left hand corner. This stung Chasetown into action, and they hit back with some good football which considering the very heavy pitch, was quite an achievement. It was following an excellent interchange between Dominik Russell, who played in Fabian Smith with a precise pass following a sublime little feint, whereupon the Colts equal top scorer made no mistake with a rising shot into the roof of the net.
In the second half it was pretty well one way traffic down the slight slope in favour of Chasetown, but as in previous games they did not take advantage of this and were only rewarded with one more goal - coolly taken by Thomas Anelli, again following good work by Dominik Russell. They did have other opportunities as well, notably a massive goal line scramble where it was a miracle the ball didnt go in, and also a fantastic strike by Dominik Russell which was acrobatically saved by the Cannock goalkeeper who it has to be said was excellent throughout.
This is was an efficient if not spectacular performance by the Colts, but in their favour, all of their goals were scored from close range following good phases of passing and movement using the flanks as much as possible - just the way the game should be played.
The supporters named Fabian Smith as their man of the match, whilst the coaches chose Charlie Mellor as their star man, however this was a good all round team performance with lots of pluses and it is fair to say that all of the players contributed, with the possible exception of Lewis Harvey who had another quiet game in goal.
