Today proved how fascinating football can be as Chasetown Colts rounded off their last season of mini soccer with a win over a strong Holy Name team. In all fairness though, they did not play as well today as they did on the day before against Four Oaks, yet still came away with three points.
Following on from a victory in the previous game by Chasetown Scholars over FC Premier, again 'Town started a little slowly, and exactly as the previous day they conceded the first goal when a mix up in the Colts defence allowed the ball to be squared back across the goal for Holy Name to take the lead, and on the evidence of the early exchanges it was no less than they deserved. Chasetown to their credit came back well, and with Brandon Ward and Connor Williams driving them on from the midfield, they started to create good chances of their own, Dominik Russell going closest when he shot against the bar. As the half drew to a close, 'Town were on top, and had played some lovely football again, one lovely link up between Connor Williams, Kaine Cheshire and Dominik Russell, deserved a better outcome. Just before the half time came to an end, Colts deservedly equalised when from a pinpoint Thomas Anelli corner, Connor Williams got to the ball first to steer it into the net, to restore parity.
In the second half the game was more even, and was end to end for the most part, Luke Heele came on for Brandon Ward and worked hard for the cause, however, 'Town were living on the edge a few times, and it was left to Lewis Harvey in the Colts goal to come to their rescue on a number of occasions, making at least three superb saves to keep Chasetown on level terms. Colts were also making Holy Name work hard too, in particular Kaine Cheshire linked up well with Dominik Russell and showed speed and strength when on the ball. Dominik Russell nearly gave the Colts the lead late on when he hit a great shot towards the top right hand corner and the Holy Name keeper acrobatically turned it over the bar. In the last minute, Colts got the goal they yearned, when from another excellent Thomas Anelli corner, Connor WIlliams got the final touch to it and the ball looped into the goal. After the restart only a few seconds remained and 'Town held out for the victory.
Each and every one of the players played important team roles, team spirit was again very evident as it has been for most of the last two season's really. In my eyes the objective for the season has been achieved in so much as we have finished just below half way, but have competed with everything that Division 2 has had to throw at us, and all the squad have greatly improved both individually and also as a team.
Very well done boys.
